3G Cell Phones: Right on the Cutting Edge
3G Technological advances continue at breakneck speed and one of the latest “hot” topics involves the cutting edge cell phones. 3G, which stands for third-generation, is the latest product to emerge in a dynamic market. Second-generation advancements emerged in the 1990s when two separate digital voice standards emerged. These competing standards were CDMA – or Code Division Multiple Access – a standard which was able to multiplex up to 64 calls per channel in the 800 MHz band and GSM – Global System for Mobile Communication – which was able to multiplex 8 calls per channel in the 900 and 1800 MHz bands.

For example, CDMA is now introducing a “SIM” card equivalent, catching up to a valued and well-established feature of the GSM network.

The technology has been under development since its introduction in 2001 in Japan and its arrival now means that 3G cell phones come equipped with full motion video, video conferencing and full Internet access.
As the new 3G technology was quite revolutionary, engineers and developers had to make some evolutionary upgrades to the existing networks to allow for its deployment. Two distinct families emerged – 3GPP and 3GPP2 – and thus 3G cell phones were born.
3GPP and 3GPP2 continue to evolve during 2009. Complex services and standards are being developed and we can be sure that the latest 3G cell phones represent the cutting edge of what is available today. Indeed, some are referring to certain current advances as heralding the emergence of 4G, or fourth generation, but this assertion may be a little premature.
